I can only partly imagine the pain he was in as he gave us what he gave us behind that warmest of smiles…always seeming to take such joy at giving us a laugh. Williams did, and at the same time, was his own distraction. Anything to avoid digging in the dirt of what it means to Be. We distract ourselves with gossip, gadgets, and American Idols. So often in our day to day, we don’t deal with the real issues of being human. He turned to his work, until it was no longer enough, and we never saw the pain behind the Funny Man, nor were we expected to. All that he gave us masked so much, just like Pagliacci. We should be lucky we had him for so long, and that his struggles led to such great performances and great laughs…not to mention the greatest description of Golf this world will ever see. Genius burns so bright, but a candle can only burn for so long. Alcohol, drug addiction, depression…wrestle with a Demon long enough, and eventually, it will win Some with keyboards, some with paintbrushes, some with a guitar pick, and some with a microphone.įor 63 years the candles in his Cafe burned intensely, and maybe Genius has it’s price. They keep striving and looking for that elusive ‘Something’….Every night when you lay your head down at your regular bedtime so you can get up early, I assure you, these Madmen are just coming awake at the Insomnia Cafe to wrestle with their Demons. We settled into routines and learned the lines.but that’s not the way of Artists. As kids, we were all play and experiment and fun and make believe, and then at some point, most of us conformed. We watch, we laugh, maybe even pretend to ignore the spectacle because we have no way to relate…or maybe we’ve forgotten. But for a true Artist…well, they can’t even tell you why.they do it because they are compelled.because there is something inside them that needs to come out….and very often, maybe most often, us regular folk don’t get it. Some people strive for fame or attention because that’s what they crave. There are some things we do in this life for the joy of it. More than that though, we lost a genuine Artist…a true Genius…. Today, we lost not just a comedian, but a doctor, a nanny, a therapist, a madman, a teacher, and, of course…a Genie. Death surrounds us every day, in some form or fashion, and sadly sometimes it’s people we know, sometimes it’s not…and sometimes, it’s people we think we know because we’ve shared so many memories with them on the big screen. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. “ I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Late last week, I re-watched The Watchmen…so, it was only natural that when I heard the news of Robin Williams today, in my head, the first thing I heard was the line from that movie, “Today, a Comedian died”….Th en, a short while later, by chance, or not, when talking to my brother, Ian Andes, about the news, he quoted a story told within the same movie….perhaps even more appropriate: I hope that you enjoy his writing as much as I do.
